Useless, that's what I am. No one can use a useless creature.
Why was I born? All I can do is fill up space in this miserable place.

I am the only son of Bohop and Maydrop. Guess they're glad of that.
What if they had two of me. Double trouble, that's what it would be.

But what can anyone expect of a donkey born in the hills of Galilee?
Nothing important ever happened around here that I know of.

Oh well, I have plenty of time to grow. And grow to be what? To do what?
I've seen a lot of my kinfolk just standing around. And standing some more.

They don't seem to be doing much, except eating and snorting and sleeping.
They're just like me. Useless and good for nothing. Unimportant and unloved.

But I'm beginning to take notice of the world around me. And I do some wondering.
I wonder why the daylight turns to darkness. I wonder where flowing water goes.

I wonder what's on the other side of those mountains. Probably nothing.
I wonder why it gets so hot in the daytime and why it's so cold at night.

But I'm still growing and I am still thinking. Did you see that? Someone riding
On the back of my cousin Dodrop. Wonder where they're going. Nowhere!

Uh oh. A man came to our place yesterday wanting to buy a burro. Me!
Well, I don't like it here and I probably won't like it where he lives, so what?

And the very next day he puts a woman on my back. What's going on?
I don't think I like this at all. I think I'd rather be back at home, resting!

Oh well, maybe I'd better be careful and not stumble. This lady is heavy.
How far are we going? That road ahead looks like it'll never end.

But it does end. This is Bethlehem. This is where Master Joseph was born.
What? No room for this tired woman in the inn? Something has to be done.

We all end up out in the sheepshed. Where this woman delivers a child.
And I begin to wonder some more. Until some shepherds arrived.

What am I hearing? This newborn child has come straight from Heaven?
And He is the Son of God? Can't be. God would never be born in a stable.

But all the other animals agree there is something very special in this baby.
They believe He has journeyed more than just a trip from Galilee to Bethlehem.

My how the days have flown by. We have traveled from Galilee, up to Egypt,
And now we have settled in Nazareth. And now I feel that I am worth something.

I was the one selected to carry the one who carried Him. Mary, the mother.
I'm still not much. But I now believe I am here for a reason. And you are too.
