The 90s saw a mini-movement of US bands that mixed the authentic sounds of blues, rockabilly, and country with the energy of punk rock, as bands such as Jon Spencer And The Blues Explosion, Revered Horton Heat, and Southern Culture On The Skids emerged. The latter outfit has been around the longest however, formed in Chapel Hill, South Carolina, during the mid-80s by vocalist/guitarist Rick Miller. An early version of the band issued their debut recording, Southern Culture On The Skids (also known as First Album), in 1985, but split up shortly thereafter. By 1990, Miller had put together a new line-up, which included Mary Huff (bass) and Dave Hartman (drums). Beginning in 1991, Southern Culture On The Skids began issuing albums with regularity (for a variety of indie labels), including 1992's For Lovers Only and 1994's Ditch Diggin'. The band signed on with Geffen Records for two albums, 1996's Dirt Track Date and 1997's Plastic Seat Sweat (during which time Chris "Crispy' Bess (keyboards/rhythm guitar) was welcomed into the line-up), before moving to TVT for 2000"s Liquored Up And Lacquered Down.
