Biography

Born Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Foster is one of the leading songwriters and producers of the modern rock era, a multi-Grammy Award winner who has been involved with some of the bestselling songs of all-time. His name is synonymous with AOR (Adult Orientated Rock). The precocious Foster learned to play piano as a child and enrolled at the University of Washington at the age of 13. He left college three years later to play with Chuck Berry's band, one of the most difficult initiations a fledgling musician could possibly undertake. Foster relocated to Los Angeles at the start of the 70s where he joined up with the Canadian band Skylark, which included his then wife B.J. Cook. The quartet signed a major label recording contract with Capitol Records and achieved a Canadian number 1 and a US Top 10 hit in 1973 with, "Wildflower". Foster later worked with leading Los Angeles session men Danny Kortchmar, Paul Stallworth and Jim Keltner in the Attitudes, enjoying a minor hit in 1976 with "Sweet Summer Music". By now he had become a leading session keyboard player, working with Rod Stewart, George Harrison, and Barbra Streisand, but of more note was his burgeoning production and writing career.

Foster's clients included Hall And Oates, the Average White Band, Boz Scaggs, and Deniece Williams, and in 1979 he earned the first of his many Grammy Awards for composing Earth, Wind And Fire's "After The Love Has Gone".

Foster enjoyed even greater success in the 80s, writing and producing a string of massive hit singles for Chicago (including the US chart-topper "Hard To Say I'm Sorry", "Hard Habit To Break", and "Will You Still Love Me?"), and writing lead singer Peter Cetera's solo chart-topper "The Glory Of Love". He also worked on Lionel Richie's bestselling 1983 album Can't Slow Down and composed John Parr's transatlantic hit single "St. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion)". During this period, Foster enjoyed a hit single of his own with "Love Theme From St. Elmo's Fire" reaching the US Top 20 in 1985. Minor solo hits with "The Best Of Me" (a duet with Olivia Newton-John) and "Winter Games" and a series of forgettable AOR collections for Atlantic Records followed during the late 80s.

In the early 90s, Foster worked with Natalie Cole on the multi-platinum and multi-Grammy Award winning Unforgettable " With Love, and collaborated with Whitney Houston on the film soundtrack, The Bodyguard. He teamed up with Celine Dion on her English language breakthroughs, 1990's Unison, 1993's The Colour Of My Love, and 1996's Falling Into You, and enjoyed further hits with artists including Madonna ("You'll See"), All-4-One ("I Swear") and Toni Braxton ("Un-break My Heart").

During the mid-90s Foster launched his own Atlantic imprint 143 Records, one of the first signings to which was Irish band the Corrs.
