Biography

The story of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is as colourful and dramatic as its reputation for great music-making is world-renowned and well-deserved.

The Orchestra and its founder Sir Thomas Beecham, regarded by many as one of Britain’s greatest conductors and classical music’s more flamboyant characters, are indelibly associated. In 1946, Beecham set about creating a world-class ensemble from the finest musicians in the country. Beecham envisioned an orchestra that would bring the greatest music ever composed to every corner of the United Kingdom. Since Sir Thomas’ death in 1961, the Orchestra’s musical direction and development have been guided by a series of distinguished maestros including Rudolf Kempe, Antal Dorati, André Previn and Vladimir Ashkenazy. Today, under the inspired leadership and gifted musicianship of Daniele Gatti (Music Director since 1996), the Orchestra continues to expand its international reputation whilst maintaining a deep commitment to its self-appointed role as Britain’s national orchestra.

The RPO continues to be rapturously received by critics and public around the world, whilst reviewers at home have been no less enthusiastic: 'superbly played - a performance of great power and pace. The many crescendos and climaxes were a joy: rich, confident string sounds, delightfully fluid woodwind' The Times.

The Orchestra is London-based (its 2003-2004 Royal Festival Hall season includes a stunning line-up of concerts with such internationally acclaimed artists as Maxim Vengerov, Charles Dutoit, Joanna MacGregor, John Lill, Matthias Bamert, Christine Schäfer and Mischa Maisky) and uses its schedule in the capital as the springboard for a comprehensive regional touring programme including a residency at Northampton Theatres and a series of concerts at Fairfield in Croydon (where it is Orchestra in Association). The Orchestra also plays to tens of thousands of people across the country in open-air concerts throughout the summer months.

As an international orchestra the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has played for Pope John Paul II at the Vatican, the President of China in Tiananmen Square, at the tenth anniversary celebration of Kazakhstan’s independence. In addition to touring in Germany, Spain, Italy, Switzerland and Mexico, the RPO’s plans for the 2003-2004 season include a month long tour of the USA under Music Director Daniele Gatti and performances in Bucharest and Amsterdam with Maxim Vengerov.

The Orchestra has recently launched its own record label and currently has eleven discs in its new Here Come the Classics series. These recordings reflect the diversity of the Orchestra and range from popular orchestral and choral repertoire to light music legends and film classics. It also records widely for commercial record companies - most recently for Harmonia Mundi in a recording of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.5 and the Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture with Daniele Gatti.

The RPO extends its artistic work through a vibrant and innovative Community and Education programme. Using music as a powerful and motivating force its work takes musicians into many varied settings including projects with young homeless people, youth clubs, the probation service, schools and family events. RPO Community and Education projects promote live music making which reflect the diversity of the individuals involved, as well as the Orchestra’s own background.

Over the years, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has become a byword for exceptional quality and versatility as the sheer diversity of its activities, stretching from the populist Hooked On Classics series through the stalwarts of the European concert repertoire to long-standing associations with contemporary and living composers, bears testament. Sir Thomas Beecham once said 'Good music is that which penetrates the ear with facility and quits the memory with difficulty.' Today, as then, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra seeks unfailingly to prove the truth of his words.

The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra was formed in 1987 to complement the work of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then, it has been in constant demand for performances and recordings of classical, light classical and popular music both in the UK and abroad. It has a history of working with international celebrity artists ranging from Luciano Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli, José Carreras, Montserrat Caballé, Bryn Terfel, Chloe Hanslip, Julian Lloyd Webber, Lesley Garrett and Russell Watson to Sir Cliff Richard, Liza Minnelli, Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, Rod Stewart, Henry Mancini, Michel Legrand, Diana Krall and Elaine Paige. Recent concert highlights include a Scandinavian tour of Les Miserables and a Christmas tour of the USA and Canada with Julie Andrews and Charlotte Church. In addition to its regular summer season of outdoor concerts, plans for the orchestra in 2003-2004 include further live performances around the UK of the recently launched and ongoing series of Here Come the Classics recordings, and another Christmas tour of the USA.
