Wallin, Johan Olaf

Born: October 15, 1779, Stora Tuna, Dalarna, Sweden.
Died: June 30, 1839, Uppsala, Sweden.
Buried: Northern Cemetery, Stockholm, Sweden.

Wallin is probably the best known of Swedish hymnists. Son of an army sergeant, he attended the University of Uppsala and was ordained as a minister. He eventually rose to become the Archbishop of Uppsala and primate of Sweden. He served as archbishop 1837-1839, but had not moved to his residence in Uppsala before he died.

Wallin’s hymnal of 1819 was used well into the 20th Century.
